By next year God willing, sa Canada, nagapply kasi ako doon. At least makasama ko yong family ko doon. Di yata ako pang US at UK.

Anyway, alam naman ng Lord kung ano ang desire ng ating puso di ba and what is best for us. Kaya pinaubaya ko na sa Kanya ang lahat.

A message from Alvin and Bel.

How are you and your family? Thank you for setting up a website for class ‘86, you guys are doing a great job, now we can get updates about our former classmates and become interactive with one another. We’ve enjoyed reading exciting news about some of them.

Please forward this message to all our batchmates as I’ve had trouble sending e-mails thru our FEU group address in the past:

Congratulations Benji for becoming the ADM of your unit and to all of you who have been successful in your respective careers. We feel blessed for having people like you.

Surely, we all share your joys as we learn of your triumphs and achievements with the thought that this would deliver a significant impact on whatever programs we shall undertake.

Alvin and our family are doing fine. We would love to join you and our classmates in Maryland in June, but we’ve already made other plans during that time.

I finally learned how to download digital pictures, so I’m now able to share you some of our family pictures.

Some of these pictures were taken in our backyard, the place where Alvin spends a lot of time mowing the lawn and trimming bushes, and gardening, as he calls it his therapy.

Bye for now, regards to all and to your families.

Bel

Front Page And Center Fold

Also known as “The Aga Mulach of Class’86″, Abundio Castillo like his idol Aga had a chance to be in both front page and centerfold of a magazine. Unlike his idol Aga, he didn’t have to enter showbiz.  All he had to do is join The Cardiothoracic Unit and he automatically put himself on the spot.

In the recent edition of Advance For Nurses Magazine . Benji’s nursing team was voted Best of the Best in the entire Maryland, Viriginia, and Washington DC areas. (read Auspicious Beginning)

The Cardiothoracic Unit at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD, is basically new and yet it had accomplished a lot.

In a telephone interview, Benji expressed how lucky he is to be one of the pioneer in the unit.  He feels really blessed working with these very diversified group.

Often addressed as “kuya” by his colleagues,  Benji appreciates all the respect that he is getting from the team, not to mention, the hot freshly brewed coffee they serve him every night.

Being one of the best players of the team, Abundio was offered assistant managerial position. Without hesitation, he gladly accepted the position knowing that this team had never and will never let him down.

Congratulations and Good Luck Benji Castillo…proud to be FEU-IN 86′er.

(From: Advance For Nurses - 2008 Best Nursing Team)

The path from formation to prize winners wasn’t an easy one for the Cardiothoracic Unit at Suburban Hospital.

By Gail O. Guterl

Decked out in navy blue scrubs to have their picture taken, the nurses of the Cardiothoracic Unit at Suburban Hospital displayed high energy and lots of humor when the ADVANCE photographer came to call recently. It was easy to see why they won the 2008 ADVANCE for Nurses Best Nursing Team award - this team simply loves what they do.Nevertheless, the journey for this young team from formation to a prize winning unit hasn’t been easy.

(BENJI CASTILLO ON THE CENTER…making the news!) The Cardiothoracic Unit, a partially NIH-funded program within Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD, had to surmount impediments to orientation because no unit existed when nurses signed on. (Some staff had to orient in the ICU and other departments at Suburban and at Johns Hopkins Hospital for cardiac training.) Once it formed, the 10-ICU and 10-telemetry bed unit also had to sell itself to area cardiologists and integrate into the preexisting hospital culture.Yet in just 2 years, this 34-nurse team grew from an idea to a fully functional group dedicated to the universal bed model and to learning cutting-edge treatment methods for patients.

Overcoming Hurdles“It was difficult at first, integrating into a new hospital and starting a unit that had never existed,” said Carol Wesley, MSN, MHA, RN, CCRN, CNA,BC, director of Cardiothoracic and Cardiology Units, who entered the team in the contest.”As a new unit, we had to establish our credibility and competency with the docs in the hospital and build a collaborative approach with the intensivists. If we could go through all this and grow as a team, which we did, and maintain good quality care with patients, I thought I should enter the team in the ADVANCE Best Team contest.”Wesley believes what distinguishes this team is “how nurses are trained across the board in telemetry, ICU, open heart care and how they blend these skills to work with patients.” This is all part of the universal bed model, in which the patient is housed in the same bed through all stages of care.

Keeping this team in top form is an evergreen goal. Victoria Kark, MSN, RN, CCRN, CCNS, CSS, clinical nurse specialist, orients new staff including new grads. Kark is no stranger to being on an ADVANCE for Nurses Best Nursing Team. She was on the very first best team awarded in 1999 at Washington Adventist Hospital, Takoma Park, MD. “It takes an entire unit to raise a new grad, like it takes a village to raise a child. Here we have nurses that were new grads a year ago now caring for open heart cases,” she told ADVANCE. And clearly it works; Kark boasts a 100 percent retention rate for new grads.

Still, a challenge for this team is blending the variety of skill levels. “A lot of what we do is looking at hemodynamics and learning how to interpret and respond quickly,” said Leslie Duquette, BSN, RN, CCRN, assistant nurse manager. “The different management of open heart patients, medications - balancing it all is the big challenge.”

Diverse Care & Culture

With diverse backgrounds, ages and genders - a fourth of the staff are male; many nurses hail from the Philippines, India, South Korea and New Zealand - variety is a hallmark of the Cardiothoracic Unit. That includes an inquisitive nature seeking new and better ways to care for patients.

In its quest for improved methods, staff, with help from a grant from a benefactor, has undertaken learning guided imagery and healing touch. “We found the type A cardiac patient benefits from these therapies and several of our nurses have jumped on the opportunity,” Wesley explained.

Gail O. Guterl is editor of ADVANCE for Nurses.
